Arriving in Denmark

Welcome to Copenhagen!

Denmark

Situated in Northern Europe, Denmark covers a total of 43.000 square kilometres distributed over 406 islands. The population totals 5.38 million. The official language is Danish, but most Danes understand and speak English.

Copenhagen

Copenhagen – the capital of Denmark – was officially founded in 1167. The small fishing village, as it was then, prospered and developed into København – 'port of tradesmen'. Today Copenhagen is the commercial, cultural and administrative centre of Denmark, and the greater city area has a population of 1.7 million. Although busy and noisy as any large city, Copenhagen continues to captivate visitors because it has managed to maintain some of its original charm. Compared to many other cosmopolitan cities, it is considered a safe city.

Climate

The climate in Denmark varies but spring and summer are generally temperate, windy and occasionally wet. Autumn and winter are windy, dark seasons, but the temperature during the day is rarely excessively cold although it can get below freezing. The coldest months are January and February with an average temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. July and August are the warmest at approx. 17 degrees Celsius.  You will need warm clothing – a warm coat and waterproof shoes are advisable. It is also a good idea to bring a sleeping bag, if you intend to travel during your stay.

Time Zone

Copenhagen is in the Central European Summer Time Zone (Standard time zone: UTC/GMT +1 hour; Daylight saving time: +1 hour)
